One of the main perks of being a remote worker is, without a doubt, the ability to take your time to travel and explore different destinations, immersing yourself in the culture and experiencing the real local lifestyle of the place. This freedom to move locations and explore different parts of the world is what makes people so drawn to the remote work lifestyle.

This time, we want to introduce you to another special destination worth exploring on many levels and inspire you for your next travel adventure. From our perspective, there are more than six things that define Kotor as a great place to visit as a remote worker or a digital nomad, but we decided to choose the best ones that might make you rethink your travel plans and take a detour in this part of the world.

Kotor is a coastal town nestled in the beautiful Kotor Bay of Montenegro. Along with its unique geographical position, rich culture, and history, this town has a lot to offer.

If you’re a remote worker looking to go to an inspiring location with stunning nature, a Mediterranean climate, and an easy-going lifestyle in the offseason, without the tourist crowds, then Kotor might be the place for you, so don’t skip the following lines.

1. Great geographical position

To start with, the geographical position of Kotor is quite unique. The town is nestled in the bay, between the magnificent mountain (Mt. Lovćen) and the Adriatic Sea. The whole of Kotor Bay is full of little coves and towns you can visit and explore on a bike or with a car. On the same day, you can enjoy the sun, take a dip in the clear, warm sea, hike up the mountain, and soak up some magnificent views. From Kotor, you can easily go on day trips to Perast, Budva, Lake Skadar, or even Dubrovnik in Croatia, all less than 2 hours away by car. It is also a great starting point to explore other Balkan countries in the surrounding area, such as Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, or Albania, and discover their natural beauties and try delicious food.

2. Relaxing lifestyle

An easy-going lifestyle is another thing Kotor is known for, just like its fellow Mediterranean countries. Something about the sun, sea, and light breeze makes people value and enjoy small things in life. Drinking coffee in the sun, chatting with the locals, and going to the market is part of the everyday life of Kotor residents. There is no rush hour, crowds, fast-paced rhythm, or much grumpiness. There is time for everything. You often hear the expression “samo polako,” meaning “just take it easy,” which is a kind of Montenegrin national saying explaining that anything can be achieved with ease and no stress. Now, this sounds like a pretty good life motto, wouldn’t you agree?

3. Culture and people

Kotor has a very rich history, culture, and tradition and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. In the heart of Kotor, Stari Grad (Old Town), hides a medieval vibe and architecture. The town is surrounded by stone buildings and tiny streets, churches, restaurants, and historic sites. It’s a real treat to stroll around the streets of the Old Town.

When it comes to the locals, besides the “samo polako” easy-going culture, Kotor is known for its welcoming and friendly people, always ready to help. In general, Montenegrins, together with other Balkan nations, like to make visitors feel welcome and at home. Culturally, we would say that work-life balance is valued quite a lot over here, and quality leisure time is equally important as work. When it comes to language, you should be just fine navigating around with English, although just for fun, you can try and pick up a few Montenegrin words since locals usually appreciate it a lot.

4. Coliving, coworking community

Sometimes, even if the place itself offers the most perfect setup when it comes to natural surroundings or attractions, as digital nomads and remote workers, we travel differently, and we are seeking more than just a nice place to stay and check all the tourist places. We need a place to work, focus, meet like-minded individuals, connect, and experience the perks of slow travel. Luckily, at Kotor Nest, we managed to create a place that offers all of the above. The concept of coliving, coworking community showed that any place can become even more valuable to location-independent workers who are traveling and are in search of one space that has it all.

Besides Kotor Nest, you can find a few other coworking spaces in the surroundings of Kotor, or even work from one of the cafes overlooking the sea.

5. Stunning nature

The natural surroundings of Kotor are something that makes this place even more special. The combination of mountains and the sea is really unique and makes a picturesque setting.

All nature enthusiasts will thrive here because of so many outdoor possibilities, including hiking, swimming, cycling, kayaking, and more. For instance, Lovćen National Park is just above Kotor and offers stunning views and plenty of hiking options, while the gorgeous Lake Skadar is about an hour away. If you want to take it further, a bit more than 2 hours away by driving to the north, you will find a gem called Durmitor National Park, one of the most beautiful places in this region and more than worth visiting.

6. High safety

Montenegro, in general, is considered a very safe country for travelers. Kotor itself has high safety, especially in the low season and with fewer crowds. It is quite safe to walk around and explore the town at any part of the day. As always, it is advised to keep an eye on your belongings, especially in the high season with a lot of tourists, but other than that, you can freely enjoy your stay in Kotor without stressing about it. On top of it all, in case of any emergency, the friendly locals are always there, willing to help if needed.
